In your opinion, what has been the greatest advance in technology over the past ten years? I am curious to see if everyone agrees on the same answer or if there are a lot of different opinions.

There are too many for me to make a fair poll. Razz

Some popular ones are social networking (Facebook, Twitter, etc) and home video production equipment (affordable camcorders, editing programs).

And those are good suggestions Arch, however I'm thinking more of things that affect our personal lives. I didn't specify that, though.

A Question For You... Empty Re: A Question For You...

Post by FlareonMaster Sat May 14, 2011 12:10 am

For me, technology is amazing and a wonderful thing to have and I hope it will even advance and keep advancing. Over the past ten years, so many inventions have been created. As for social networks, there is YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Skype and many others which have replaced Myspace, Gmail and AIM for example. As for phones, I mean only ten years ago, cell phones were still very new and only about 15% of America's citizens owned one. Ten years later, the average of America citizens to own a cell phone is about 75%!

Then look at the difference in technology for phones within that time. For the first five years, cell phones were only good for calling and then with that same time, texting and taking pictures. The Razor which started to be around in 2005 was one of the first phones to feature a video camera and the ability to watch pre-recorded televised events. Then came the next big step in the cellular phones department. The iPhone. Whether everyone owns one or not at all doesn't matter, it is what switched the way phones are today. It was the first phone to introduce full on video games on a cell phone, touch screen, YouTube on mobiles and also had a built in web browser, weather app and note app. Notes, calendars and web browsers were available before then, but not for long and the iPhone brought out a new way of doing it.

Since then, the iPhone, Droid, Blackberries and HTC are the most popular cellular phones as they have the most features which is why they are called "Smart Phones". Now not only do we have all the features I mentioned, but built in wireless internet for when you're in bad satellite zones, app stores, e-books, movies, television shows, Facebook, Skype, Twitter, Radios and an endless amount of other apps to help you.

Now as for computers, what can I say? I mean look at the think Mac Books or the High Definition Desktops, touch screens, editing capabilities for videos, programs, I mean everything has progressed and made easier and faster than ever before. The computers nowadays are so much more advance than ten years ago that it isn't even funny to say those older computers are antique. It is quite hard to believe how far in advance we are now compared to the year 2000 only eleven years ago. Even televisions have far succeeded televisions of that time. Now they are super thin and super large with the best known quality available at the current time.

Now for video games, ten years ago we all played the N64, Gamecube, PS1, PS2 and Xbox! Those are now also considered antiques or better yet, classics. To think, only twenty years ago we were still in the 16 bit era. Everyone remember Super Mario World? I sure do. Now there is the Nintendo Wii which was the first system to introduce motion controlling. Sure the Xbox has Kinect, but it is different enough from the Wii to show that they both can be good in different ways. Then look at the Move for PS3 which is a literal copy of the Nintendo Wii. Either way, all of the three current systems beat anything we grew up with. Graphics, game play, everything. With the internet we can speak to someone from other countries while playing video games such as Call of Duty! Look at all of us? We all play internet video games. Everyone who is a video gamer does now. The internet has improved greatly as well and is continuing to get better! To think I can sit at a computer, talk on a phone or play a video game with a friend such as C.J or David from over 1K miles away, might not seem like such a big deal now, but ten years ago people would have claimed it to be impossible!

Technology is great and improving each day and introducing new ways to do everything all the time. Good examples are the iPods to iPhones and now iPads which are roughly and most likely the biggest change in technology over the past ten years.

However, with all of this technology, there is also a very dark side. With it, kids grow up faster and experience things that shouldn't until they are an adult themselves. Sadly parents mostly don't monitor their kids either because some just believe it is out of their hands, they don't care or are too busy to pay attention. Nowadays, thirteen year olds are the new twenty-one year olds! R rated movies, M video games, Pornography, pirating, hacking, stealing and the list goes on even further! The internet is great for those who have good intentions, but is seriously bad for those who wish harm or want to explore something such as sexual activity through, let's say a computer or cell phone. I doubt anyone can honestly say (unless they are too young to do so or don't use modern technology) that they haven't been exposed to something that is wrong via the internet. Not by choice most of the time, but sometimes by choice as well which is roughly 50% of American teenagers. I know I have personally, for example, seen Pornography because a friend of mine (not specifying who) showed me his phone which was streaming a porno and I had to push him away to get him to stop.

As for stealing and hacking, a very good example of this is what is happening to the PSN network which was recently (about a month ago) hacked and currently is unclear as to when it is returning. Need I say more? Well, look at malware viruses which searches to take information from your computer if unsecured.

If there were ways to control the internet of hackers, Pornography and everything else that is bad and shouldn't be experienced until your adult (and for some things, never) then the internet would be a wonderful place. However, we cannot. Overall though, the internet and everything technology based is amazing and should definitely be improved even further with the release of something new or something old done in a new way!

I would have to say though, to give a deliberate answer to the question, the Apple company going from the at the time new MP3 player called the "iPod" to the iPod Nano, iPod Shuffle, iPhone and now even iPad, well, in my opinion, that is the most improved and amazing technology up to date. With each new device or model of iPods, iPhones and iPads, they show up other companies with new, wonderful and brilliant ideas. There are numerous reasons for why the iPhone, iPod and iPad are in my opinion, the best current technology, but the major one is, they changed the way we use many devices such as phones, video games, camcorders, cameras and so on.

So, how do you like my answer? I am not planning to write this again so you better like it or get used to it. lol!

PS: I didn't edit any of this or even re-read it because I am tired. So if something I said didn't make sense, just ask me. I am sure tomorrow I can explain better. Razz I am tired, good night.

A Question For You... Empty Re: A Question For You...

Post by doge Sat May 14, 2011 12:52 am

Greatest invention over the past ten years is really nothing. I mean, Americans are screwing themselves over.

Giving my sexy self and other sexy Americans the icon of a fatass salty, sweaty, gross, fatrolls over everywhere is terrible.

Texting on our phones, the "Scene", music, television shows, Black Ops. It's all making our image look like retards, and the British can laugh at us and say, "Boy, Independent America is doing well!"

Really. Some inventions were somewhat good, as in, Minecraft, RuneScape, in some ways, cellular devices, the Apple company has impacted us alongside Dell and Microsoft, the Mars Rover has given us insight on our surrounding vast universe, research.

But, let's explain some great inventions, but could hurt our lives positively and negatively.

Facebook is just another small structure of some human reserve after any possible work to communicate with far away friends, but really isn't a necessity. It kind of makes things a bit dumber, seeing as if you are talking all day and playing Facebook games instead of continuing on important studies. Just another boring structure in our social norn, alongside other social networking sites. (Yahoo!, YouTube, this forum, MySpace, Twitter.)

Cell Phones. Not extremely important in my opinion. All it is a phone that you can bring on your journies and travels, but can only communicate in certain areas. Call, text, or play some game, or low-rated hard to use tools. I hate using phone calculators... That you have to CONSTANTLY CONSTANTLY RECHARGE AND ATTEMPT TO NOT DESTROY. Phones are partial to causing brain cancer and ruined young developing minds, who one could find a cure for all diseases!

iPods and MP3 players are somewhat important, but if you think about it long enough, it's not important. It's useless. $200.00 for Angry Birds, some tools, and 500 songs. Yay.

Whatcha think of technology now?

A bit important, or a teency bit useless?

A Question For You... Empty Re: A Question For You...

Post by FlareonMaster Sat May 14, 2011 1:26 am

You do realize, hardly any of the products were made in America and are used world wide? FYI, I didn't read your entire post because the beginning didn't seem to make any sense because everywhere technology is around and no one is making fun of anyone for using technology such as cell phones for texting as you said. (btw, I've since read your post as I say below)

Also, sounds like you don't really understand a lot of things in technology or how to use them or don't care to use them. As for calculators, that isn't even a big feature and is only difficult on older phones. XD. iPhones aren't just about Angry Birds obviously either because that is just a video game that I would bet you own since I know you own an iPod Touch. Remember wanting all of us to play Nova 2? iPod Touches and iPhones are an MP3, MP4, web browsing, picture and film taker, video game machine, cell phone, texting, socializing, calendar, calculator, book, movies, television, GPS, weather indicator and as I specified, many more things that are just too long to mention.

No, no one needs all of that but they aren't meaningless and make things easier for the average person. None of it is hard to use and if you think they are, then I doubt you have much skill with technology in the first place... However, I doubt that you don't know how to use technology such as PC's or Cell phones for one reason: You played RS, iPod Touch, are on here and do countless other things as well.

So my answer to what you said (as of now I read your entire post) technology is definitely not useless but not meant for everyone. Also, if you feel the way you do so strongly about some of the things you said, why you on here in the first place at 12:22 at night when you could be studying? Lol. Doesn't matter if it is Saturday night. As for me, I finished school for the year last Tuesday, so I have a right to not study tonight which I normally would be doing. Haha.

However I can agree with you that many people abuse their time on the Internet for things that aren't necessary and waste time they could be spending studying. However even before Internet, there was other stuff teens did to be sidetracked. However the Internet is also very helpful for school, so overall it is very prominent and not meaningless, but there is some dangers that people less mature use or are affected by.

I like debating. Razz

Flareon, remember when humans could find coordinates using their head? Doing things correctly themselves? Now due to technology, we are getting dumber.

But don't get me wrong, tech is great.

Optimus Prime wrote:Flareon, remember when humans could find coordinates using their head? Doing things correctly themselves? Now due to technology, we are getting dumber.

For your information, I do things by head and so do many others. Technology isn't making people dumber, it is simply helping people get better. Calculators and text books, for example, have been being used for a long period of time and when they were at their prime, going by what you are saying about the modern way of school, back then, that would have been considered the same as today with technology.

I just don't understand how you can say "tech is great" while saying "it is making us dumber" at the same time. Besides, if we were all getting dumber, how is it we have technology in the first place? Within thirty years time, we all own computers, cell phones and video game systems due to the progression of technology and all three of those can help with school. As I said, it is the people who abuse technology that aren't in the right, so I can agree with you that it can be a deterrence and can harm school work and or work itself. We have to be the ones to decide how to go about using it properly and those mature enough to do so, get smarter, not dumber.

Post by Eagle Eye307 Sat May 14, 2011 1:48 pm

I believe I know what Lux means when he says modern technology is great but is making most people "dumber". We all agree that technology IS great. It allows us to do awesome things we never would have been able to do without computers, cell phones, the internet, etc. However, as a common saying goes, too much of a good thing can be bad. Technology is so great that it easily distracts us from other important aspects of our lives. Many of us get so caught up in video games and television that we neglect school, work, exercise, social activity, and more. Doing so creates a negative impact on our lives. Having said that, technology is still a good thing in my opinion, but only so long as it's being used in moderation.

A Question For You... Empty Re: A Question For You...

Post by Salmarnir Sat May 14, 2011 2:07 pm

I would also like to mention medical technology. If all other bits of tech were useless, medical would be the one I would call necessary. If you or a family/friend gets sick, loses a limb, has a failed organ, or can't see, modern medicine can help. For example, if a marine were to lose an arm or a leg in Iraq, doctors nowadays can save those people's lives and in some cases give them a new leg or arm. If you have blockage in your heart or one of your kidneys fail, no problem. Surgeons will go in and unblock your heart or give you a new kidney. If you have trouble seeing, an optometrist can give you glasses to correct your vision.

The list goes on and on: cancer treatment, bone marrow transplant, a countless myriad of drugs and over-the-counter medications (some of which may be placebo, but that still helps patients), psychiatric help, better equipment for doctors and surgeons alike, and even just better trained family physicians who help keep you and your family healthy.

As you can see, technology isn't limited to computers, phones, the internet, and other electronic devices. I agree that all of those things are useful and entertaining, but I find medical advances to be the most important out of all other technology in the world.

Nice job Jake. I didn't think to mention that either, but agree with what you said. We also forgot to mention traveling such as cars, planes and so on. With higher technology, for example, if we were in a car crash, we now can send out signals to authorities to come help us immediately! It is also very important.

Yes, and I agree with most of the other things you stated, especially the good and bad sides of technology. It mainly depends on the user's intent, but it is also possible to be exposed to evil content unwillingly (like the time your friend showed you a clip of pornography on his phone). A similar incident happened to me with a friend except he sent me a link disguised as something else, as a joke. The actual video it brought up scarred me for life. >_<

That is a very good point Jake, in fact almost everything in our lives has been affected by technology in some way.

Yeah, I agree. Food, drinks, cars, medicine, and many other things are designed on computers and built by robots or high tech factories. It's really hard to find something unaffected by technology in some way.
